Le Verdon sur Mer
The French village Le Verdon sur Mer is home to some 1,300 inhabitants and is located in the Département Gironde. The district includes La Pointe du Grave, the tip of a land tongue wedged in between the Atlantic Ocean and the mouth of the Gironde river. There is a regular ferry service connecting Port Bloc and Royan (ride time:20 to 30 minutes). Port Bloc is a nice little port which is host to a daily fish market during the holiday season. Tourists love Pointe du Grave for its breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean and the mouth of the Gironde. The swimming fraternity can choose between the sandy beaches characterized by the Atlantic currents or the mouth of the Gironde which is rather more quiet. The latter destination is particularly popular amongst families with children. Pointe du Grave is also the starting point of the GR8, a lovely hiking trail which runs along the entire Atlantic coast. Moreover, there is a very popular cycling trail (about 10km long) connecting Pointe d Grave and the village of Soulac-Sur-Mer. Ever since the 12th century the area between the Atlantic Ocean and the mouth of the Gironde has been home to the old salt marshes Logit and Conseiller, the latter hosting many species of birds. The lighthouse of Cordouan is also very well-known, being regarded one of the most beautiful ones of its kind. The lighthouse is located between the coast of Charentes and the Gironde coast on a rocky plateau, some 7 kilometres off the mainland.
