| Rügen, Germany’s largest island has a total surface of more than 1,000 square kilometres and is located in the Baltic Sea. With its more than 60 kilometres of sandy beaches, it is known as a high-quality holiday destination. The island is particularly well known for its diversity and prides itself with two national parks: The national park at the Jasmund, marked by the famous chalk cliffs, and the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park. In the south-eastern part of Rügen there is also a biosphere reserve. |

You see, the island has a lot to offer, also in terms of culture and history. Rügen was inhabited many thousands of years ago which can be witnessed when visiting the grave mounds and sacrificial stone altars on the island. Remnants of the more recent history are the many manors, castles, parks and gardens. The northern and southern part of the island are characterised by Cape Arkona and the new bridge respectively.
