However, tourism in this part of Italy is still of manageable proportions, contributing to the livelihood of the region and its people.
The valley and ist lake is particularly popular amongst activity tourists (particularly mountainbikers) and those for whom relaxation is more important than spending their vacation in a bustling tourist metropolis. But the area is perfectly-suited for watersports, too.
The flora and fauna around Lake Ledro is quite unique. And with each season the lake changes its face. Which is why spring with its lush green colours, summer with its bright light and fall with its many colours never fail to amaze visitors and residents alike. Not to mention the host of delicious foods, which are produced mostly from natural products in the area.
The Lake Ledro pile-dwelling settlement near Molina is an awesome vestige of the first inhabitants of our Alpine valley.It is an entire village (built upon nearly 10000 wood stilts) from the Bronze Age, and it is almost 3700 years old, dating back to 1709 BC, according to carbon-dating tests by Prof Barfield from the University of Birmingham). |

From prehistoric artifacts found it appears that the pile-dwellers farmed, made pottery, wove fabrics, and travelled great distances to trade in their goods. Their standard of living was generally quite high. Afterwards, a pre-Latin people called the Alaeutraenses (as indicated by the name of the valley), settled here. The Roman author Pliny mentioned the Alaeutraenses in his book "Natural History".
Between the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC another population, probably the Cenoman Gauls, colonized the valley, travelling from their settlement in Brescia to the Chiese and Sarca Valleys and bringing with them the first elements of Roman civilization. | |  | | | Lake of Ledro: pile dwelling |
